Dr. Diwani Msemo

Executive Director, Ocean Road Cancer Institute

A seasoned Radiation Oncologist and Palliative Care expert with over two decades of experience in clinical care, leadership, and policy development. Dr. Msemo was appointed by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, as the Executive Director of Ocean Road Cancer Institute in January 2025.

30th Anniversary Ocean Road Cancer Institute

Established in 1996, the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) has served as Tanzania's national referral center for cancer care for three decades. As we celebrate this milestone, ORCI continues to lead in delivering comprehensive oncology services including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgical oncology, nuclear medicine, cancer screening, research, training, and palliative care. This anniversary conference brings together over 600 participants from more than 20 countries to share knowledge, celebrate achievements, and chart the future of cancer care in Africa.

Executive Director, Ocean Road Cancer Institute

Dr. Diwani Msemo is a seasoned Radiation Oncologist and Palliative Care expert with over two decades of experience in clinical care, leadership, and policy development.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB.ChB) from Makerere University in 1997 and joined Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) in 1999, where he began his journey in Oncology and Palliative care.

Between 2002 and 2004, Dr. Msemo served as Head of Palliative Care at Johannesburg Hospital and was part of the Faculty Steering Committee on Palliative Care at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He later earned a Fellowship in Radiation Oncology from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (2004), a Master of Medicine in Radiation Oncology from the University of Witwatersrand (2005), and a Diploma in Palliative Medicine from the University of Cape Town (2007).

Dr. Msemo's leadership roles include serving as Chair of the Tanzania Palliative Care Association (2005–2015), where he was instrumental in shaping National Palliative care policy and promoting its integration into academic institutions. Internationally, he has been recognized for his expertise in palliative care, being appointed in 2008 as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Palliative Care Expert Committee. He also served on the IAEA Global Breast Cancer Initiative Committee and holds board positions in several national and international organizations, both public and private.

At ORCI, he served as Director of Medical and Allied Services (2010–2015) and Acting Executive Director (2014–2015), leading key institutional reforms. From 2017 to January 2025, he worked as Principal Oncologist at Muhimbili National Hospital - Mloganzila.

In January 2025, Dr. Diwani Msemo was appointed by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, as the Executive Director of Ocean Road Cancer Institute.

He currently serves as the Chairperson of the ORCI 30th Anniversary Organizing Committee and remains an active contributor to both National and International Oncology and Palliative care initiatives.
